Maybe it’s just that Dr. Jeffrey Raval is a new father, or better yet, the fact that he and his wife Amy have welcomed their son into the world is in perfect alignment with Dr. Raval’s theory of cosmetic treatments: Baby steps are preferred. To explain in detail: minor and modest upkeep over the years is the better alternative to an extreme cosmetic makeover.

Call it the Colorado Way for this board certified cosmetic surgeon and ear/nose/throat physician who is lately known as The Filler Guy. Instead of over-the-top surgery, Dr. Raval recommends that patients nurture their good looks with constancy and regular small treatments from BOTOX to laser peels.

Fillers, too, fall under the category of minor treatments. And best of all, according to Dr. Raval, The Filler Guy, fillers are NOT permanent. Instead the dissolve over time—sometimes three months; sometimes longer.

“The fact of the matter is that the face is not a permanent fixture,” says Dr. Raval. “Therefore, the treatment to improve it should not be permanent either.”

Optimally, fillers are used to achieve a more natural improvement than wholesale makeovers through surgery. Plus most fillers have been found to stimulate the production of collagen, a natural substance that our body produces actively in your younger years.

The introduction of fillers has turned the cosmetic surgery field on its head. While it used to be that the preferred course of treatment was to cut out the excess skin…today fillers are used to plump up the skin where it has lost its fullness through aging.

The eyes, say The Filler Doc, are the perfect example. A decade ago, surgeons like Dr. Raval were taught to cut out the excess skin. Then came fillers, and patients with bags under their eyes were now able to undergo a minimally-invasive treatment of refilling the sagging skin under the eyes, resulting in an immediate improvement, a more youthful, refreshed look.

“Not all cosmetic treatment should be extreme,” cautions The Filler Guy, Dr. Raval. “Less radical minimally-invasive treatment is clearly the better alternative.”

As we get older, our faces lose volume. Being particularly skinny when this volume loss occurs can emphasize the effects of aging. It is a time you won’t mind having a few extra pounds. But before you reach for that extra scoop of Haagen-Dazs, realize that according to the New York Daily News, it only applies to women over the age of 40. A little extra fat in the face can make young women look older and older women look younger.

Dr. Jeffrey Raval can help women over 40 by restoring the lost volume in the face through use of injectable fillers. This is a quick and minimally invasive procedure that can be performed in office with very little pain and recovery time.

“The analogy that tells the story best is the grape and the raisin,” says Dr. Raval who compares youthful, plump skin to a fresh grape. As the grape ages, it loses its volume and turns into a raisin. The same thing happens to the face, he explains, as it loses fat volume over time.

Fillers like Restylane, Perlane, Juvederm and Radiesse are injected into the skin, plumping it up and leaving the patient looking years young instantly.

Sure looking great equals feeling great. But a new study shows those who receive Botox injections experience happier moods and less irritability in daily life. Globe Life reports the study followed 25 basically equally satisfied women and of them the 12 whom had Botox injections were rated happier on a psychological test. This theory has evolved from Darwin’s theory that smiling can evoke happiness and frowning can elicit unpleasant feelings. Dr. Lewis, an experimental psychologist in Whales calls this theory of the connection between facial expression and emotions “facial feedback.” Bottom line: relaxing the facial muscles relaxes the whole person. If you cannot furl your brow in anger, you will be less inclined to become angry and your face will have less wrinkles so then you’ll really have something to be happy about.

Beauty didn’t used to be a topic in serious business magazines like Forbes or the Wall Street Journal. Over the decades, the notion that youth is inextricably linked to the skill set enabling a great leader to tackle an all-consuming job such as president has gripped popular culture. In some circles in the most recent presidential election, BOTOXTM became as much a discussion as rightwing and leftwing leanings. Realself.com asked its readership the bold question, “Will Obama be the top Botox salesman of the year?”

“President Obama’s youthfulness is largely due to his ethnicity,” says Jeffrey Raval, MD, FACS and American Board certified facial plastic surgeon in Denver, CO. Darker-skinned people have more subcutaneous fat in their skin which makes their skin stay plumper and more youthful looking much longer in life. “He’d look even younger if he’d quit smoking.”

Dr. Raval has witnessed an increase in the demand for Botox among his female and male patients over the last half year. As the appetite for Botox among Dr. Raval’s patient base has increased, it’s the Doctor’s theory that this trend is more about the economy than it is politics. “Patients are opting for more non-invasive treatments like Botox and fillers and putting off major surgeries like facelifts,” explains Dr. Raval who is also American Board certified ear-nose-throat physician.

When money is tight, even upscale patients are more likely to opt for less expensive treatments vs. foregoing beauty treatments altogether.

Time magazine reports that the number of men in the U.S. who paid to get a series of tiny injections in their face nearly tripled from 2001 to 2007-to 300,000, or about 7% of the total Botoxed population. And despite the recession, those numbers aren’t going down yet; one of the many things the laid-off cannot afford is to look their age.

The Boston Globe reports that the demand for the anti-wrinkle injection remains strong even as the current U.S. economic slowdown has hurt sales of other high-end items like designer handbags and fine jewelry.

Forbes magazine reports that Americans spent just over $13 billion on cosmetic procedures in 2007; $8.3 billion was for surgical procedures and $4.7 billion for nonsurgical procedures.

The Wall Street Journal reported that some older patients who are putting off or forgoing expensive facelifts are instead opting for less-costly injections and laser treatments.

Nearly three of four plastic surgeons who responded to a survey in Fall 2008 conducted by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (a professional group representing 6,700 surgeons) reported that demand has increased or held steady for minimally invasive procedures, including Allergan Inc.’s Botox anti-wrinkle drug, dermal fillers used to plump up lips and smile lines, and skin-smoothing chemical peels. The survey also found a steep drop in demand for plastic surgeries ranging from breast augmentation to nose reshaping.

BOTOX is the single most common medical cosmetic treatment performed each year. Environment, time and daily stress take their toll on healthy skin. BOTOX does not stop skin from aging, but it does return a rejuvenated appearance to the face. It is most commonly used to treat dynamic wrinkles: forehead lines, crow’s feet, and frown lines. BOTOX “paralyzes” the injected area so that the muscles used to squint or frown are no longer able to contract. BOTOX has also been used to treat hyperhidrosis, or excessive underarm sweating. BOTOX temporarily blocks the nerves that activate the sweat glands.

The Procedure

For dynamic wrinkle treatment, BOTOX is injected into the muscles around frown lines in the forehead, lips, around the nose, or sides of the chin. The injected BOTOX paralyzes the muscles that form fine lines and wrinkles. For hyperhidrosis treatment, many small injections of a slightly diluted BOTOX solution are made into the area to be treated. Because the solution is slightly diluted, the treatment should spread throughout the area to be treated. This treatment will calm the nerves that overly activate the sweat glands in the underarms.

BOTOX treatments are a very short, ten-minute procedure conducted using a very fine needle to reduce any discomfort of injection. To begin, you may be asked to squint your eyes, frown, and raise your eyebrows. Injections are made in predefined areas. There may be a slight sting when BOTOX is injected, but there is very little lingering discomfort.
